Costa do Descobrimento
Bahia State, Brazil

Paciência pra dizer “não”! É o que precisa qualquer turista que vá para Porto Seguro, pois em todos os locais ele será abordado por vendedores. De água-de-coco a discos de forró, de roupas a passeios de escuna, de artesanato a tatuagens temporárias, passando por uma infinidade de produtos e serviços, muitas vezes de qualidade bastante duvidosa.

Além dos vendedores, existem também os “guardadores” de carros que se espalham por todos os pontos turísticos, e os guias, que se oferecem principalmente na balsa pra Arraial d’Ajuda e no Centro Histórico. 

Parece horrível, certo? Errado! Esse é apenas o ponto negativo de passear por Porto Seguro, facilmente compensado por suas diversas qualidades. A começar pelo Centro Histórico, que está bem conservado e oferece uma bela vista da região! A propósito, o nome Costa do Descobrimento é usado para designar esta parte da Bahia pois foi aqui que Pedro Álvares Cabral "descobriu" o Brasil, em 1500.

Patience to say "no"! That is what needs any tourist who goes to Porto Seguro, because in every places he will be approached by sellers. Coconut, CDs of typical dances, clothes, boat tours, temporary tattoos and another large quantity of products and services, often with very dubious quality.

In addition to the sellers, there are the "keepers" of cars that spread through all the sights and the guides, which offer their services mainly at the ferry to Arraial D´Ajuda and in the Historical Center.

Sounds horrible, right? Wrong! This is the only negative point of walking through Porto Seguro, easily compensated for its various qualities, starting from the Historical Center, which is well preserved and offers a beautiful view of the region! By the way, the name Discovery Coast is used to designate this part of Bahia because it was here that Pedro Álvares Cabral "discovered" Brazil, in 1500.

Baladas 

A Passarela do Álcool é o ponto onde começa  a tão famosa noite de Porto Seguro. Nas dezenas de barracas vendendo bebidas, é fácil perceber a preferência pelo “capeta”, bebida originalmente feita com aguardente, guaraná, mel e limão, mas que com o tempo ganhou novos ingredientes como leite condensado, abacaxi, vodca, chocolate, canela etc.

Se é na Passarela que começa a noite da região, onde termina? Nos enormes bares à beira-mar, sempre animados com muito axé e forró. Pra quem gosta desse tipo de música é um “prato cheio”, mas se você não curte, aproveite pra dormir cedo, levantar junto com o sol e ter mais tempo pra aproveitar as praias ou mergulhar.

Litoral Sul

Logo ao sul de Porto, atravessando de balsa o Rio Buranhém, fica Arraial d’Ajuda. Mesmo sendo as praias a grande atração de Arraial, reserve algumas horas pra conhecer seu centro, que oferece boas opções de restaurantes, pousadas e compras.

De suas oito praias, a mais bonita é Taípe. Menos movimentada que as outras e com grandes falésias (algumas com mais de 40 metros de altura), é garantia de sossego pra quem se afasta dos quiosques.

At Night 

Passarela do Álcool is the starting point of the famous night of Porto Seguro. In dozens of tents selling drinks, it is easy to see the preference for "capeta", drink originally made with cachaça (typical brazilian drink), guaraná (brazilian fruit), honey and lemon, but with the years gained new ingredients as condensed milk, pineapple, vodka, chocolate, cinnamon etc.

If the night begins at Passarela do Álcool, where it ends? In huge bars in front of the sea, always animated with axé and forró, brazilian typical dances. To those who like this type of music is perfect, but if you don´t like, is better to sleep early to wake up with the sun and have more time to enjoy the beaches or to dive.

South Coast

Immediately south of Porto, crossing Buranhém River by ferry, you will arive at Arraial d´Ajuda. Even the beaches being the great attraction of Arraial, reserve some time to see its center, which offers good choices of restaurants, inns and shopping.

Of its eight beaches, the most beautiful is Taípe. Less busy than others and with great cliffs (some with more than 40 meters), is a guarantee of peace for those who move away from the kiosks.

Vale lembrar que assim como as praias do litoral norte de Porto Seguro, em alguns locais da costa sul a água é um pouco marrom por causa do encontro de diversos rios com o mar. Mas vá sem medo pois não é algo que tire sua beleza! E, dependendo das marés, você poderá nadar nas piscinas naturais formadas pelos recifes que protegem boa parte da costa.

Be sure that as well as the beaches of the north coast of Porto Seguro, in some points the water is a little brown because many rivers drain in the sea. But don´t worry, it is not polution. And, depending on the tides, you can swim in natural pools created by the reefs that protect big part of the coast.
 

Já Trancoso, distrito ao sul de Arraial d’Ajuda, é bem menos badalado mas tem praias tão ou mais belas que as de seu vizinho famoso. As que merecem uma demorada visita são as praias dos Nativos, dos Coqueiros e da Pedra Grande, localmente chamada de praia do nudismo. Mesmo não sendo reconhecida oficialmente como local nudista (ou naturista, como preferem os praticantes), não será difícil encontrar alguém se bronzeando por inteiro sem qualquer preocupação com olhares curiosos.

Trancoso, a district on the south of Arraial d´Ajuda, is much more quiet but is equaly or more beautiful than its famous neighbor. The beaches that deserve a long visit are Nativos, Coqueiros and Pedra Grande, locally called 'naturism beach'. Although not officialy recognized as a nudist place, it´s not difficult to find someone naked without any concern about curious eyes.

No norte da Praia da Pedra Grande fica o bar e restaurante Pé na Praia, que oferece um ambiente descolado com bons pratos e bebidas. Aliás, a dica é o ótimo badejo grelhado com legumes, manga e molho chutney.

O centro de Trancoso não é charmoso como o de Arraial, mas dê uma passada logo cedo para ver o nascer-do-sol por trás da Igreja de São João, na praça principal do distrito, mais conhecida como Quadrado.

Caraíva 

Aproximadamente 70 km ao sul de Porto Seguro, fazendo divisa com o Parque Nacional de Monte Pascoal, fica uma pequena vila de pescadores onde não há carros, motos, ônibus ou caminhões. Isso porque pra chegar a Caraíva é preciso cruzar o rio de mesmo nome, travessia que é feita por canoas, já que felizmente não há pontes nem balsas. O resultado não poderia ser melhor: um local perfeito pra quem quer descansar em contato direto com a natureza.

In the north of Pedra Grande beach is the bar and restaurant Pé na Praia, a pleasant place with good food and drinks. Moreover, the hint is the fish grilled with vegetables, mango and chutney sauce.

The center of Trancoso is not charming as Arraial, but wake-up early to see the sunrise behind the São João church, in the main square, called Quadrado.
 

Caraíva 

Aproximately 70 km to the south of Porto Seguro, near the Monte Pascoal National Park, there is a small village with no cars, motorcycles, buses or trucks. The reason is because to arrive at Caraíva you must cross the river using canoes. The result couldn´t be better: a perfect place for those who want to relax in contact with the nature.

Até 1999, nem energia elétrica havia na aconchegante vila que se acomoda entre o mar e o rio. Só à noite é que Caraíva muda de ritmo, ao som de forró pra festejar mais um dia que chega, quase sempre com muito sol e uma refrescante brisa que dá uma grande ajuda pra quem caminha pela praia até a reserva indígena pataxó.

Um passeio que exige bem menos esforço mas também é imperdível é a subida do rio em um barco a motor pra observar o rico ecossistema formado pelos manguezais.

Until 1999, there was no electricity in the village, situated between the sea and the river. Only at night Caraíva change a little, with little bars playing forró to celebrate the day that comes, almost always with strong sun and a refreshing breeze that gives a great help for those who wants to walk to the indigenous villages.

A tour that requires much less effort but also is a must is the ascent of the river with a motor boat to observe the rich ecosystem formed by mangroves.

Alguns quilômetros ao norte da vila, já em local acessível para carros, ficam as praias do Espelho e Curuípe, separadas apenas por um pequeno rio. As duas são espetaculares, sem dúvida as mais bonitas que vi durante toda a viagem! Não tentarei descrevê-las com palavras pois seria inútil, prefiro usar as imagens abaixo.

Some kilometers to the north, already accessible for cars, are the beaches of Espelho and Curuípe, separated only by a small river. Both are spectacular, undoubtedly the most beautiful that I saw throughout the trip! I´ll not try to describe them with words because it would be useless, I prefer to use the images below.
